Mastopexy
I receive so many inquiries from women about breast surgery, that this article will address one of the more commonly done procedures of Mastopexy, or Breast Lift Surgery. This particular surgery raises and firms the breasts by removing excess skin and tightening the surrounding tissue, while supporting the newly shaped breast. A woman's breasts change over time and lose their youthful shape and firmness, along with losing skin elasticity. There are many reasons that this can occur. Some of these changes can be the result of:
Aging
Heredity
Weight fluctuations
Pregnancy
Breastfeeding
Gravity
Another problem that sometimes occurs with the passage of time, is the enlargement of the areola. A breast lift will reduce this as well. In essence, a breast lift can rejuvenate your figure, allowing a more youthful and uplifted profile to emerge.
However, this is not a magic formula to correct every breast flaw. For example, it will not change the size of your breast. If you want your breasts to appear larger or smaller, you might want to think about breast augmentation or breast reduction surgery.
One of the major risks of Breast Lift surgery is unfavorable scarring. I most often recommend a Brazilian Breast Lift procedure because it significantly reduces the scarring, and gives a fuller breast without the use of an implant. This then also reduces potential complications that breast implants can sometimes bring. I accomplish this by using the patient's own breast tissue in making the fuller upper breast, rather than the implant. Thus the patient receives the implant look without the use of an implant!!!
The results of Brazilian breast lift surgery are typically longer than the traditional breast lift. Over time, your breasts can continue to change due to aging and gravity, but it should last for 10-15 years, and sometimes longer.
After your surgery, bandages will be applied to your incisions. You will need to wear an elastic bandage or support bra to cut down on the swelling and to give you support, as you heal. You will be given specific instructions on the care of your breasts, medications, and when to come into see me for your post operative appointment. You will immediately see the results of your breast lift surgery. Over time, your swelling will resolve and incisions will become less visible.
Health insurance does not typically cover breast lift surgery, as it is considered to be cosmetic in nature. Another point to mention is that any complications or surgical revision required is the responsibility of the patient because it is cosmetic.
Your decision to have breast lift surgery is very personal and only you will be able to decide if the benefits will accomplish your desired results and if these benefits outweigh the potential risks. These are some of the things that will be discussed with you during our consultation and I will help you in explaining the risks to you. I will also give you consent forms to read and sign that will explain everything in detail. You are encouraged to come in for a second consultation if you have any further concerns before surgery.
I hope this has been informative for you and has given you a better perspective of this very beneficial surgery performed every day by board certified plastic surgeons.
